Please join us on September the 26th at 3 pm to welcome Joan Lubin to the department, and celebrate the inaugural meeting of the newly reformed 20/21 colloquium. Dr. Lubin will be giving a talk entitled ‘Deviant Careers.’ A brief abstract is below:
The original deviant career was the so-called oldest profession, but over time the language of the career was metaphorized to describe not income-generating activities like sex work or gambling but ways of life like transsexuality and homosexuality. This talk narrates the history of the term “deviant career” as it migrated from the sociology of criminality into the sexual theory of deviance studies, before being ultimately superseded by the vocabulary of sexual identity, losing its ties to the political economy of sex work along the way.
