Study Abroad Opportunities

The English Department supports its students to explore options for studying abroad, wherever their interests may take them. Two programs offer particular benefits to English majors.

Balliol College, Oxford University: Junior Year Abroad Program for Yale English Majors

Interested students who have questions are invited to join the English DUS or ADUS for office hours.

English majors at Yale have the unique opportunity to spend their junior year studying in Balliol College at Oxford University. The English department is the largest in the UK and subjects include Victorian Literature, Introduction to Old English, Practical Criticism, Early Modern Literature, Medieval Literature, Shakespeare, Restoration and Augustan Literature. You are eligible to receive nine credits for the year abroad, and can earn credits towards the English major.

Yale in London

Yale in London offers Yale undergraduates the opportunity to take spring or summer courses in London at the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. Subjects include British history, architecture, art history, literature, and drama.  Instructors include both Yale University professors and British scholars, and all courses receive Yale credit. The program includes field trips to museums and historic houses in London and other English cities, as well as drama courses that make full use of London’s theater scene.  Classes are scheduled so that students can explore London or surrounding areas in the afternoons and on weekends, and students are free to visit other parts of Europe during long weekends or midterm break.
