Anthony Reed to Receive the MLA’s William Sanders Scarborough Prize for an Outstanding Scholarly Study of Black American Literature or Culture; Mary Helen Washington to Receive Honorable Mention

New York, NY – 1 December 2015 – The Modern Language Association of America today announced it is awarding its fourteenth annual William Sanders Scarborough Prize to Anthony Reed, of Yale University, for his book Freedom Time: The Poetics and Politics of Black Experimental Writing, published by Johns Hopkins University Press.  Mary Helen Washington, of the University of Maryland, College Park, has received an honorable mention for her book The Other Blacklist: The African American Literary and Cultural Left of the 1950s, published by Columbia University Press.  The prize is awarded for an outstanding scholarly study of African American literature or culture.
