Coleman Professor at the University of Virginia where he specializes in 19th Century British poetry. Author of Epic (Oxford, 2008), Tennyson and the Doom of Romanticism (Harvard, 1988) and Browning’s Beginnings: The Art of Disclosure (Minnesota, 1981), he is co-editor with Dorothy Mermin of Victorian Literature 1830-1900 (Harcourt, 2001) and runs the online prosody tutorial For Better For Verse.
