Event description:

Drawing on Postcolonial theory, I will briefly recapitulate a trajectory of ‘travelling’ Shakespeares through intersecting itineraries of exploration and discovery in the early modern period and contemporary appropriations within diverse multicultural, global settings. Turning to Shakespearean afterlives, I continue an intercultural journey of Shakespeare’s Hamlet (Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider) into the landscape, histories, and cultural memories of Kashmir, from the 1990s to the present crisis stemming from the forcible occupation of the Valley. In doing so, I hope to re-consider the mutually constitutive relation between Hamlet and Kashmir, as it mutates into new histories of our times.
