Christopher Cannon: ‘Elementary Learning and the Grammatical Style: The Case of Chaucer’

January 30, 2012

Monday, January 30 at 5:00, LC 317. The English Department Late-Medieval English Literature Series presents: Christopher Cannon is Professor of English at New York University. He is the author of The Making of Chaucer’s English: A Study of Words (1998), The Grounds of English Literature (2004), and Middle English Literature: A Cultural History (2008). Currently he is exploring the way elementary pedagogy shaped literary form in a book about the medieval English school.  This research brings together long-standing interests in linguistic history, grammar (as both theory and system), the material contexts of English writing, and vernacularity, in order to explain how a literature in English emerged from literacy training conducted entirely in Latin.
