Nick Salvato: “Laziness: Around Lounging/Lounging Around”

September 14, 2012

Friday, September 14 at 4:00, LC 319. The 20/21st Century Colloquium presents: Nick Salvato is associate professor in the department of Theater, Film and Dance at Cornell University.  His work has been widely published in such journals as Camera Obscura, Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, and Theater Journal.  His first book, Uncloseting Drama: American Modernism and Queer Performance was published in 2010 by Yale University Press.  His presentation comes from a new project, tentatively entitled Obstruction.  This ambitious project aims to examine a range of experiential phenomena that are ostensibly incompatible with, and obstructive to, scholarly inquiry: embarrassment, laziness, cynicism, slowness, and exhaustion.  Drawing on works from many media, Salvato’s tentative argument is that if properly directed these obstructions can prove valuable for intellectual life.
